JMC ACADEMY IN AUSTRALIA MAKES LEARNING THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AN ENTERTAINING EXPERIENCE

Have you ever imagined an industry that churns out over 2 billion dollars a year in record sales?  An industry where competition is so fierce that mere talent and determination would not guarantee you a foot in the door? If you have, then you are on your way to understanding the global and multi-faceted entertainment industry.

But now, joining the technical revolution is easier and more fun than ever before, with JMC Academy providing students with the benefit of over 17 years experience in the music and entertainment arenas.

The JMC Academy is a fully accredited college with an international reputation in entertainment technology and training, which has put many people on the right track to a prosperous music career. Founded in 1982, and boasting one of the largest computer music labs in the world, JMC Academy is regarded as a leading institution in its field, with its professional standard acoustic studios and digital recording labs ensuring that the Academy keeps its finger on the pulse of the musical revolution.

The Academy offers degrees in Engineering Technology, Music and Multimedia, Music Business Management and Television Production and Multimedia as well as certificates in various music fields.

To keep its finger on the pulse of the musical revolution, the JMC Academy in association with Macquarie University in Sydney - established the Degree of Music and Media Studies, which aims to provide students with the knowledge and experience necessary to make an impact in the ever evolving music and entertainment industries.

The Bachelor of Music and Media Studies is a performance degree with over 800 hours of the 2000 plus hours of face-to-face training dedicated to performance in various areas and disciplines.

The course is concerned with furthering musicians' knowledge of live contemporary music performance and production.  It aims to do so by developing advanced skills in the holistic creation of music composition and arrangement, leading ultimately to the musicians finding their niche in the highly competitive commercial industry.

Although students may not be formally trained at the commencement of the course, the rehearsal time allocated to them ensures that their talent grows by leaps and bounds by the time they graduate.

On the strength of JMC Academy's long-standing reputation for churning out professionals with an edge over their competitors, entry into the Music and Media Studies degree has become a hotly contested ticket for hopefuls.  Each year, musicians from all over Australia vie for places in the course, hoping it could be their stepping stone to a professional career in the music world.

But although many opportunities exist now and in the future for employment in the music and entertainment technology industries, contrary to some beliefs, many jobs will be behind-the-scenes.

Because most times it takes more than just talent to establish a career in music business management, the JMC Academy - in association with the University of New England, Armidale - is catering to the push for hands-on behind-the-scenes experience by offering the Degree of Professional Studies. Starting in late October, the Bachelor of Professional Studies is a 3-year degree designed for those interested in pursuing a career in the commercial music industry, specializing in either management or production.

Another innovative behind-the-scenes degree offered by JMC Academy is the Bachelor of Engineering Technology, offered jointly with the University of New England and specializing in electronic engineering with a focus on audio design, installation and maintenance.

JMC Academy also caters for those whose interest lies firmly in the animation and production fields and away from the music industry by offering the Communications Degree - Animation and Television Production, in association with the University of Western Sydney, Nepean.  The Bachelor of Communications is a 3-year production oriented degree that seeks to ease graduates into the dynamic and expanding animation and television industry, and provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge to obtain employment in a wide range of professions.

For those who prefer to attempt shorter courses, JMC Academy offers 10 months certificates in Audio Engineering and Sound Production, Music Performance, Digital Production and Multimedia or Music Business Management. All courses are registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and
Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) and accredited by the relevant agencies. Degrees are offered in association with several Universities, including the University of New England, Macquarie University and the University of Western Sydney, Nepean.  HECS funding is available for the university based units.

JMC Academy's production and recording facilities are unparalleled. They include one 24-track studios, two digital 16-track music studios, four Yamaha O2R's and the Roland Digital Suite, which includes 15 hard-disk computer workstations for scoring film music.

Because a large number of people choose to set up their own studies at home, JMC Academy teaches its students all facets of the music business, from operating their own business to becoming experts at the technical aspects of production and Audio Engineering.

Most JMC Academy graduates go straight from a degree or certificate course into a job for which they are trained, ranging from audio engineering to multimedia and music business management.

Past graduates have found work in such diverse areas as Fox Studios, various record companies including Warner Chappell Music and Shock Records, and Community radio stations.

The commercial networks also benefit from the talents of JMC Academy graduates, with many audio engineers and musicians going straight into jobs with Channels 7, 9 and 10.

JMC Academy combines teaching by experienced professionals with an atmosphere where creativity can flourish supported by the most advanced music and entertainment technology. It is the ideal place to start a career in the entertainment and music industries.

International Connections Consulting's (ICC) President, Tasha Lewis, had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Martin Cass (MC), Managing Director of  JMC Academy, at the Americas Workshop this past February in Miami, Florida.  Ms. Lewis was very impressed with the programs that his school offered. She pointed out that several years ago she was involved in the music production business and had the opportunity to work on and appear in a Music Video.  Most people, including herself, didn't realize all of the behind the scenes work that goes into the Music Industry.  Ms. Lewis felt that a lot of new musical artist should try to take the Music Business Management course before entering into such a competitive field.  She knew first hand all of the potential areas of difficulty with her own experiences in the industry as a performer and producer.

Additionally, Mr. Cass gave ICC an idea of what types of criteria for evaluating future students and the qualities they look for.

ICC:    "What is your criteria for evaluating a student for acceptance? Age? language proficiency?"

MC:     "IELTS 5.5 Academic or 6.0 General/TOEFL 550 are our English Language requirements.  If they don't have these, they do our ten week English program-English for Music and Entertainment Professionals."

ICC: " What type of student do you accept?  What qualities do you look for or consider when deciding to accept a student?"

MC: " Commitment, dedication, understanding of the Music industry and how tough it can be.   Ambition - where do they want to go. How are they planning to get there? Outgoing, friendly ,active in Music/Ent Tech industry - bands, build websites, already know some engineering - experience."

ICC:    "Explain your teaching methodology."

MC:     "Combining academic learning with practical experience. Giving students room to learn for themselves."

ICC:    "We would like to thank Mr. Cass for the interview."

International Connections Consulting's President, Tasha Lewis, would like to thank Mr. Martin Cass, Managing Director of  JMC Academy, and Catty Azzi, for supplying the information for the article.  If you would like to enroll or more information, please contact International Connections Consulting.

Ms. Tasha Lewis, President of  International Connections Consulting (ICC), had the pleasure of meeting with the Direttrice, Tiziana Di Dedda (TD), at the Americas Workshop in Miami, Florida this past February and was able to learn more about Dilit for ICC's clients.

ICC:    "What is your role at dilit International House?  How long have you been at the school?  (any other background information that you wish to provide)."

TD:     "I have been the Administrative Director of the school at Dilit since 1974 and  in the organization International House since 1972."

ICC:    "What in your opinion is the most compelling reason for a student to attend dilit International House?  What makes dilit International House unique?"

TD:    "Our excellent reputation, the teaching method: communicative approach, high quality of all services and individual care, international atmosphere with students from all over the world, rich cultural and social program. Nice and very centrally located premises with self study center (open from 8.30 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. - free access), snack-bar, sun terraces, garden."

ICC:    "Explain some of the programs that you offer?  How does this enhance the learning experience for your students?  What types of courses do you offer?"

TD:     "We offer: Intensive courses of 30/ 20 or 15 hours per week all year round, from beginner to advanced level (from level 1 to level 9). Courses start every four weeks - the minimum attendance is 2 weeks. Optional courses are: Business Italian, Italian cooking and wines, Photography, Italian cinema, Roman Archaelogy, History of Art. School Year - 32 weeks"

TD:     "Our students are from over 55 different countries in the world, from 16 to 70 (and over) years, all types of professions (from students to Ambassadors) and every person who wants to study seriously, is welcome."

ICC:    "Explain your teaching methodology."

TD:     "We adopt a fully communicative approach which is up-dated all the time. Language is never presented out of context; and grammar, phonology, lexis and all other features of actual language use in everyday situations are analyzed. A wide variety of up-to-date authentic material is used. Amongst the principal techniques and procedures employed in class are: communicative tasks, group work and dramatization. The accent is on activity rather than on passive receptivity."

ICC:    "Do you offer financial aid, scholarships, or assistanceships to help defray the costs of tuition, room and board? academic scholarships?  dance scholarships?  If so, what is the eligibility criteria?"

TD:     "No."

ICC:    "We would like to thank Ms. Tiziana Di Dedda for the interview."

In their spare time, all of the students have free access to the language laboratory and the self study center at any time, and for as long as they like, between 9.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. The language laboratory is of the audio-active-comparative type, and specially designed tapes help the students improve their pronunciation and consolidate their grammar. The self study center houses up-to-date listening facilities and associated study material, various other kinds of study material of the
simple-to-use "worksheet" type, video booths, computers, books to read, grammar books and dictionaries to consult.

The aim of the social program is to ensure that students have every opportunity to practice the language they are learning and at the same time make friends and have fun.

There is a snack bar on the premises serving drinks and snacks at low prices. It is a quiet place where students can relax and make friends. A lot of students have lunch there after their classes in the morning or before going to classes in the afternoon.

The school organizes a full and varied program of social activities for the students (e.g. films, excursions, concerts, operas, guided tours, parties, etc...) The teaching staff runs the activities making sure that any language or difficulties are taken care of. A calendar of social events is given to each student on entry to the school. All activities except dinners, excursions, operas and concerts are included in the enrollment fee.

Students can choose from various topics: Roman Archaeology, Photography, Italian Cinema, Italian Cooking and Wines, History of Italian Opera, History of Art. All these courses have a substantial practical component. The classes are held twice a week and last 3 hours. Each course lasts 4 weeks.  Business Italian classes deal specifically with business situations and the language and communication skills required for doing business in Italian. They are held three times a week and last 2 hours. The program lasts 4 weeks.

Every week, outside normal class time, seminars (included in the enrollment fee) are held on the following subjects:

- Literature
- History
- Regions and Towns in Italy
- Italian Cinema
- Italian Cooking
- Italian Wine
Examinations are organized throughout the year for the following qualifications:
- DILIT-IH Intermediate
- Diploma DILIT-IH Advanced Diploma
- CILS
The CILS is a government recognized certification system consisting of 4 levels of language competence - run by the Università per Stranieri di Siena. Examinations are held in Rome twice a year, in June and December. To attain an adequate language competence to pass these examinations students should follow the General Italian Courses. However, students need practice with specific examination procedures and this is the purpose of this program. The classes are held twice a week and last 2 hours. The program lasts 5 weeks (the 5 weeks preceding exam dates).

International Connections Consulting's President, Tasha Lewis, would like to thank Ms. Tizana Di Dedda, Directtrice at Dilit International House, for providing the information for this article.  If you would like to enroll or more information regarding the school, please contact International Connections Consulting

ICC AT THE AMERICAS WORKSHOP 2000

The fourth annual ICEF (International Conferences, Exhibitions and Fairs) Americas Workshop took place in Miami, Florida USA at the Fountainebleau Hilton Resort and Towers on Miami Beach at the end of February.  With offices in Beijing, Berlin, Bonn Canberra, Leuven, London, Madrid, Prague and Seoul, ICEF organizes conferences, seminars, workshops, exhibitions and fairs that deal with Online Learning,
International Education, Languages and Cultures, Tele-Working and Knowledge Management.

During the last ten years, such events have taken place in Barcelona, Berlin, Beijing, Budapest, Frankfurt, Geneva, The Hague, Honolulu, Kiev, Kuala Lumpur, Lisbon, London, Maastricht, Miami, Milan, Minsk, Moscow, Prague, St. Petersburg, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Singapore, Stockholm and Warsaw.

Participants include private and state-run educational institutions of all levels, educational advisers and referral agencies, professional associations, governmental bodies, international publishing companies, producers of educational equipment, companies and professionals involved in translation and interpretation as well as suppliers and manufacturers of broadcasting technology, communications technology, computing technology, multimedia and software providers.

This year ICEF decided to expand their educational adviser/agent attendees of the America's workshop to include countries in Asia, Europe, the Middle East in addition to Latin America. This opened up the appeal of their workshops to the large number of schools who ordinarily wouldn't have participated.  This was also an added benefit for the agents because they could foster partnerships with some foreign educational advisors who offer similar or complementary services.  These types of events always serve numerous
purposes (agent-school partnerships, agent-agent partnerships, informational (workshops), networking, etc.).

International Connections Consulting (ICC) was the only American educational advising company invited to participate in the conference this year. ICC's President, Tasha Lewis, felt privileged  to be given the opportunity to be involved in it this year.  The workshop provides an ideal opportunity to bring together educational advisers, referral agents and travel agents  together with educational institutions from all over the world.  ICEF acts as a facilitator for this event.  They screen all of the participators for quality control.  For two days, meetings are set up before and during the conference over the course of the conference.  Agent/Advisor can meet with a large variety of schools for 20 minute intervals.  Introductions are made and from there you can continue communicating with the new contact.

Some of the schools that Ms. Lewis met with were Russell Pynt of Chalmers Business College in Australia, Claude-Marc Kaminsky of Ecole des Roches in France, Tiziana Di Dedda of DILIT International House in Italy, Dr. Paul J. N. Steyn of University of South Africa in South Africa, Simon Craft of  The Swiss Hotel Management School in Switzerland,  Janet Turner of Dudley College in the United Kingdom, Declan Murphy of Yamasa Institute in Japan,  Ian Joseph of Home Language International, just to name a few.

In addition to the meetings, the conference offered additional activities for attendees such as an evening lawn party and welcome reception.  Since the site is located at a resort, the attendees are given many other opportunities to relax and enjoy the facility after the conference or make additional meetings outside the workshop meetings.

Ms. Lewis  is always on the  lookout for new programs to offer her clients. The event offered her another opportunity to meet with the owners, directors, etc of some of the best educational institutions in the world.  The schools offer a wide variety of programs and activities for everyone.  Not just students but whether you are a businessman, senior citizen, teacher, or on vacation, there is something for you.  Whatever your fancy, skiing in the Alps, snorkeling and surfing in Hawaii, learning about wine in France, or studying Japanese in Japan, there is a program for you.

While Ms. Lewis met with the schools, she thought about what programs she would like to take in her small amount of spare time.  Since she teaches  part time at one of the universities in the Washington, DC  USA Metro area and  a foreign language program for young people in addition to her educational advising business, she is always on the lookout for programs of study for herself to enhance her businesses and update her skills.

Mrs. Rebecca Stromeyer (RS) and Mr. Karl J. Badde (KB), both Directors of ICEF, were on hand to talk to ICC's President, Tasha Lewis, about the Americas Workshop.

ICC:    "Can you tell us something about the Americas Workshop?"

KB:     "A number of educational fairs around the world grew out of  the desire of  schools around the world wanting to meet with students in other countries.  These institutions needed an intermediary between themselves and the students.  This new market developed into workshops for schools to meet with advisers/agents from particular regions.  The invitees (advisers/agents) are by invitation only.  Their accommodation, food and in some cases their flights are paid for.  The institutions that participate in the workshops pay the advisers/agents fees.

The advisers/agents are required to participate in a specified number of meetings.  By participating in the ICEF conferences, schools save a tremendous amount of time and money by being able to meet with a large number and variety of agents for two days.  The institutions can make contacts with between 40-80 agents from various countries.

The overall concept of the workshops has been successful from the start. We now hold 7 conferences covering the globe.  The Americas Workshop is specifically for the Americas (North and South America).  This year we invited agents from 50-60 other countries to come to North America because this is such a large market."

ICC:    "Can you tell us a little bit about the Distance Learning portion of the conference?"

RS:     "The Distance Learning is a similar concept as the Americas Workshop.  The sellers are Distance Learning providers, Technology, Software Companies, Content providers and Publishers.  The buyers or brokers are the agents.  This section is about establishing partnerships between providers of education between different countries. As well as partnerships between Technology companies, universities, and publishers.

KB:     "In this instance, the brokers/agents could be universities or publishers who would like to link up with institutions who provide the technology or software to Distance Learning providers to give it to their students or advisers/agents. Distance Learning is especially important to Third World countries."

RS:     "Universities are also able to work with companies who can assist them with developing Distance Learning software for their students."

KB:  "Most of the brokers at the Americas workshop are from Latin America. The providers come from 6 to 7 different countries.  Products in the English Language are especially popular in Africa."

RS:     "The main theme within the Distance Learning is partnership formation for the following areas:  Software Companies and universities: Universities and developers.  Adapting software/hardware: Technology: CD Rom: Publishing."

ICC:    "Can you tell us about some of your upcoming events?"

KB:     "Overall, ICEF is in the business of Marketing Education."

ICC:    "Can you talk about what ICEF is doing to keep pace with competition/ or keep up with the Global Marketplace."

RS:     "We are always looking for ways to improve our products and expand. If your company is not looking for ways to improve or innovate, you can stagnate in the industry.  Competition is healthy."

ICC:    "I can understand what you mean.  In the February issue of the ICC Newsletter, we featured an article on "ICC Spread the Word Campaign."  The article talked about getting all of our clients (businesses, organizations, schools, teachers, and vacationers) to get involved in spreading the word about the benefits of using our services (Free Educational Advising, Global Event Calendar, Resource Directory, Newsletter, Promotion Flyers, Book Section, etc.) to enhance their businesses by keeping informed with what conferences, competitors, and other countries are doing to keep up with the Global Marketplace.  "Survival of the fittest" and being most prepared is the key."

ICC:    "What advice can you give to future Educational Advisers/Referral Agents?"

RS:     "We try to invite new advisers/agents each year to expand the outreach and variety."

ICC:    "After attending my first ICEF workshop in 1997, I decided to expand from being a public relations consultant for one school to an educational adviser who works with various schools worldwide.  The workshop helped me to see the bigger picture."

ICC:    "Do you offer workshops or information to prospective advisers/agents?"

RS:     "We have a workshop on becoming an Educational Adviser.  We supply the material and information to potential advisers."

ICC:    "I would like to thank Mrs. Rebecca Stromeyer and Mr. Karl J. Badde for the interview.

International Connections Consulting's President, Tasha Lewis, would like to thank Mrs. Rebecca Stromeyer, Director, Mr. Karl J. ICC'S NEW BOOK SECTION

International Connections Consulting's (ICC) new Book Section will be in place by the  end of  May 2000.   It will allow independent publishers, writers, small, medium and some big companies (book stores, independent/university, schools-who would like to sell their own textbooks to future students or other institutions) to take advantage of our  specialized audience and continuous Marketing Program by placing a listing in the Book  Section for a reasonable fee.  In return, their book or web site will receive international exposure.  Just imagine, you have a book that you have always wanted to write and get published.  Most of us have had this dream all of our lives.  However, as many young writers realize the process can be quite tedious and lengthy let alone costly if  you don’t  obtain a big publishing contract.

Many of the stories lead us to believe that you could become rich overnight.  The reality is quite different.  So many up and coming writers never realize their dreams due to time, money, and  a saturated market, etc.  Self Publishing is a viable option but it can be quite costly and possibly never allow you to reach your desired goal of making the bestsellers list.   International Connections Consulting decided to offer their new ICC Book Section to facilitate this market niche.  By listing in this section and paying a fixed monthly fee, you can get the word out about your book, publishing company, writing services, workshops, etc. without having others cut into your bottom line.  With ICC’s monthly marketing campaign (e-mail, fax, flyer distribution, media, book publishing companies and  related associations-to commence in May), each listing receives maximum exposure.  It's like having a Marketing and Public Relations Department built in throughout the year.

The topics and subject matter of each book will have to meet certain guidelines predetermined by ICC to ensure that the quality and mission statement of our web site is not compromised.  As far as company listings, the firm has to be a legitimate and reputable one.  Please view our web sites information (www.intlconnections.com/brochure.htm) and Resource Directory  (www.intlconnections.com/directory) to learn more about what we market and  promote before submitting request to avoid potential conflicts of interests.  ICC thanks  you in advance.

ICC will explore combining this new section with the upcoming audio/video online conferencing.  This would allow entities to increase their sales via advanced online tools that can augment desired results (for example, author book signing or meet the author  online).

Contact ICC today for more information and pricing.

ICC HAS THE RESOURCES TO MEET THEIR CLIENTS' NEEDS

Everyone needs resource information to facilitate their studies or work. Quality resource information is an invaluable tool.  International Connections Consulting (ICC) has spent the last 13 months researching and
investigating various types of resource information that would appeal to their wide variety of clients (business people, organizations, students, teachers or vacationers).

ICC's Self Service Resource Directory provides a wide variety of information to the world regarding cultural information, education, funding, scholarships, and specialized programs, etc. This service allows their clients to obtain additional information to further assist them with their education programs, vacations, business opportunities, and teaching material, etc. One positive aspect about the directory is the exactness of the material. ICC tries to be as specific as possible with the listings.  This is extremely important when someone is in a hurry and doesn't have a lot of time to do guesswork regarding which sections serve their needs.  ICC tries to limit its categories to those that serve their  clients needs.  The
company recognizes the value of  time.  In today's fast paced society, time is a luxury that many of us don't have.  Therefore, it is critical to get the information that we need when we need it in a efficient, fast, and timely manner.  The ICC Self Service Resource Directory fulfills this need.

By listing in their resource directory, their clients receive multiple benefits.  Being listed in the ICC Resource Directory gives them global exposure with a built in ongoing marketing campaign monthly (mass faxing, e-mail, direct mail, search engines, word-of-mouth, conferences, distribution-flyers/downloadable flyers, advertising-press releases, media, etc.).  They can enter their own listings, have multiple listings or add other features depending on what their needs are.  If you are interested in listing in the directory or obtaining more information contact ICC.   All listings have to be in line with the overall subject content/theme of the ICC web site.   All Paid listings have to be pre approved.  However, for information about our 1 FREE listing, visit http://www.intlconnections.com/resource.htm to learn more about it.  Please read all of the instructions carefully to avoid confusion.

Later this spring, International Connections Consulting will launch a Book Section that will give up and coming future self publishers, writers, or small to medium size companies the opportunity to get the word out about their work.  Contact ICC for more information.

AT FORESTER  INSTITUTO INTERNACIONAL IN COSTA RICA LEARNING SPANISH CAN BE A TROPICAL EXPERIENCE

Learning a second language promotes a better understanding of one's native language; as well as knowing another culture contributes to a better understanding of one's own culture. When we observe the role that a foreign culture plays in shaping its members' actions, beliefs and judgments, we are better able to understand how our own culture influences our attitudes and values. By living in a foreign country, an appreciation of cultural diversity can be developed. It helps us discard the preconceived beliefs
and stereotypes that often influence our perception of members of other cultures. Many of  the challenges (personal relationships, verbal interaction, non-verbal communication, family values, work values, social
etiquette, time perception, leisure activities, ethic and aesthetic viewpoints) offers opportunities for discovery.

Forester Instituto Internacional (FII) in San José, Costa Rica, provides several exciting programs of instruction in the Spanish language. Their short term courses--1 to 4 weeks--are extremely popular among visitors to the country. These courses of study are designed to satisfy, in a quick and efficient manner, the growing need for Spanish language skills.  Long term programs for those interested in staying more than one month are offered as well. FII was founded in 1979. The school's philosophy is that it be a cheerful,
congenial place to learn Spanish. The staff members enjoy meeting and relating to people from different countries and backgrounds.

Located in a quiet, elegant residential area, the institute is  20 minutes from downtown San José. The classrooms are sunny and comfortable with a green area and a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains. In addition to the main building, there is an annex a few blocks away that is normally used during the busy months. This facility is very attractive with additional classrooms and a swimming pool. Both buildings have a total of 22 classrooms.

FII offers the following programs:

  • STANDARD LANGUAGE PROGRAMS
  • EXCURSIONS PROGRAM
  • PRIVATE TUTORING
  • SPECIALIZED SPANISH PROGRAM
  • PROGRAM FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SPANISH TEACHERS
  • SPECIAL PROGRAM FOR TEENAGERS
  • PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN
  • HOME LANGUAGE LESSONS

Forester Instituto Internacional's Excursions program includes several visits to many of the sites and natural treasures that make Costa Rica unique. The tour guides are professional and trained to work with Spanish students. In addition to giving information, they encourage the students in learning and practicing the language. These half-day excursions can be combined with any of the four lessons per day programs or with private lessons. The programs are also available to individuals not taking classes but who are accompanying other students. Each week the institute organizes a couple of activities such as cooking
classes, dance lessons, a tropical fruit class, going to the theater, concerts, discos and other gatherings. Activities are posted on the bulletin board in the reception area of the school.

Students can use the computers in Internet room to access the Internet and send and receive E-mail. The institute offers this service free of charge.

The administrator at the students school has to agree to his or her participation in the program. One semester unit of credit is  usually granted for each 15-20 hours of class time. Thus, a 4 week program of 4 hours of class daily would generate 4-5 semester credits.  A student applying for credit will receive, at the end of the course, a transcript indicating the number of hours of class attended and the teacher's evaluation.

Academic Credit can be obtained through a university in the USA.  Contact FII for details.

International Connection's Consulting President, Tasha Lewis, would like to thank Mr. Horace LoPrete, Director of  Forester Instituto Internacional, for all his assistance with the article.  For more information or to enroll, contact International Connections Consulting.

COLEGIO MAYOR GALILEO GALILEI IN VALENCIA , SPAIN OFFERS A UNIVERSITY
CLIMATE FOR LEARNING

Not every student who desires to study abroad wants to leave the ambiance and atmosphere of the university life behind.  Some appreciate the hustle and bustle.  As well as all of the modern conveniences that are available on most university campuses.  Colegio Mayor Galileo Galilei offers their students an opportunity to learn Spanish with all of the elements you would find on most college campuses in addition to the native college students to make the environment complete.

Colegio Mayor Galileo Galilei, which is situated inside the polytechnic campus; is the largest and most modern of its kind in Spain. The building, which was founded at the end of 1997, adjoins the university's sports centre, and both the city center and the beach (only a kilometer away) can be easily reached by using either the five local bus routes or the tram service.

Ms. Cristina Navarro(CN), Course Coordinator at Colegio Mayor Galileo Galilei,  gave International Connections Consulting (ICC) some of the reasons foreign students study at their school.

ICC:    "What is your role at Galileo/Galilei?  How long have you been at the school?  (any other background information that you wish to provide)."

CN:     "I'm the Course Coordinator of CM Galileo Galilei, my role is not only to organize the courses and activities for the students but to counsel them and coordinate the work of our teachers. I'm also in contact with our agents to make sure they have all the resources needed to inform and advise prospective students.

I have been doing the same job for nine years. I have been working in Colegio Mayor Galileo Galilei since its beginnings (two years ago)  before I came here I was working in a partner school organizing and coordinating also English and French courses for Spanish students."

ICC:      "What in your opinion is the most compelling reason for a student to attend Galileo/Galilei?  What makes  Galileo/Galilei unique?"

CN:     "Galileo Galilei is a really impressive school, there are many things that attract our students. We are in the midst of University life, on the campus of Polytechnic Valencia our students love to live immersed in this lively atmosphere, next to the beach and surrounded by Spanish students. This is one of the most compelling reasons for them to come, right now there are more than 400 Spanish students living in Galileo Galilei, it's really the best way to live and learn the Spanish language and way of life.

There is no need of unnecessary displacements and lost of time as they live and have their lessons in the same building.

Another reason is our premises.  There are lots of facilities for our students to take advantage of such as a reading room, multimedia room, music room, library, three study rooms, TV room etc,  sport facilities (gym, tennis and squash courts, swimming pool, basketball courts, etc); developments such as Internet, e-mail, private telephone and air conditioning system (hot and cold) in all the rooms.

The comfort they find in a big modern school like this is hardly found in any other school in Spain (really).

To end (I could go on and on with more reasons) they are sure before coming of the quality of our Spanish courses, we are affiliated to a prestigious University and everything we do has to be supervised and approved by them."

ICC:      "Explain some of the programs that you offer?  How does this enhance the learning experience for your students?  What types of courses do you offer?"

CN:     "All our programs combine formal Spanish lessons with extra -curricular activities, with the objective of introducing our students to the culture and traditions of the city, region and country. Apart from local visits they include meetings with Spanish students (residents), introduction to the university life on campus, etc. There are 5 hours per week dedicated to these activities which are very popular between the students.

We offer General Spanish courses (from 20 to 30 hours per week);  in addition, courses where a student can learn Spanish for Business, Communication in Spanish, Spanish life and culture or prepare himself for
the DELE exams."

ICC:    "What is your criteria for evaluating a student for acceptance? Age? language proficiency?"

CN:     "We accept students of all nationalities but with a limit: our policy is to maintain a high mixture of nationalities in order to ensure the practice of the Spanish language and not the student's native language, so we have to state a maximum number of students per nationality.

We accept students from 15 years old with no upper limit (we also welcome groups of juniors accompanied by a tutor in special programs) and from beginners to Proficiency level."

ICC:    "What type of student do you accept?  What qualities do you look for or consider when
deciding to accept a student?"

CN:     "We accept almost all types of students with a good educational background, in order to maintain a high level of cultural integration between students."

ICC:  "Explain your teaching methodology."

CN:     "Our idea is that a student learning a foreign language has to have a good time in class while he/she learns, and practices the language. This can be achieved combining a very active and professional team of teachers with a methodology based on developing communicative skills.

The students have to feel they are learning something useful, we encourage them to participate in class and as we want them to understand that they can use what they learn in class and in real life, we hold some very practical lessons in places such as shopping centers, trams, buses, railway/bus stations where they can practice with unknown native people. Other activities based on communication such as role plays, theatre, TPR (total physical response) activities and so on are also very good to keep the interest/attention of the students."

ICC:    "Do you offer financial aid, scholarships, or assistantships to help defray the costs of tuition, room and board? academic scholarships? dance scholarships?  If so, what is the eligibility criteria?"

CN:     "We don't offer scholarships in the exact way but we have lots of free activities for our students such as dance lessons, parties etc."

ICC:    "We would like to thank Ms. Cristina Navarro for the interview."

International Connections Consulting's President, Tasha Lewis, would like to thank Ms. Cristina Navarro, course coordinator for Colegio Mayor Galileo Galilei, for providing all of the information for the article.  If  you would like more information or to enroll, please contact International Connections Consulting.

Student's feedback
Michael Dale  26

Course: I was very happy with the classes and I feel that I have learnt a lot. I am confident that what I have learnt provides me with a good foundation to build from. Belén (the teacher) was incredible! It's obvious that she has the necessary patient and other qualities of any great teacher.

Accommodation: First class, perfect for a student who needs to study.

Valencia: The college is located perfectly between the beach and the centre of town. Valencia is a great city with maybe an even greater future.
